ALKOOMI WINES

Alkoomi Wines has received a ‘Red 5 Star’ rating by James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2010. The ‘Red 5 Star’ Award is a highly coveted recognition bestowed only on outstanding wineries which regularly produce wines of excellent quality. Recipients must have had at least two wines rated 94 points or above, and the winery must have had a 5 star rating for the previous two years. This is Alkoomi’s consecutive 3rd Red 5 Star Rating and it is further testament to Alkoomi’s commitment to producing world class wines.

The Alkoomi vineyards and winery of Merv & Judy Lange are located in the Frankland River district of Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region. Since climatic conditions are similar to those of Bordeaux in France, it is not surprising that this region produces some of the best wines made in Australia. The name Alkoomi is taken from local aboriginal dialect and means ‘a place we choose’. The logo represents a distinctive Australian plant which grows in the area.

2008 UNWOODED CHARDONNAY

The 2008 Unwooded Chardonnay White Label is light to medium straw-colored with a nose of apple, pear, citrus, and floral notes. This leads to a ripe, spicy palate with melon and pear flavors, good depth, and excellent concentration. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

Deep magenta with violet hues at the rim. Spice and cassis notes fill the aroma and merge with sweet vanillin from maturation in French oak. Soft and mouth filling with flavours of redcurrant and plum. Ideal with red meats. Ready to enjoy now, this wine may be cellared for two to three years and gain further complexity .

2009 RIESLING

Light pale straw with a greenish hue and brilliant clarity. A sweet citrus nose, of lemon and grapefruit juice. A beguiling hint of fennel leaf in the background adding to the complexity. Sweet fruit flavours of citrus and lychee introduce the taste, leading to a full and irresistibly sweet fruit driven palate, balanced with lingering soft acidity. Drinking well now, this wine will cellar well for up to ten years.

2006 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

A classic medium-bodied Bordeaux style wine, combining elegant berry and minty fruit with fine tannins and soft acidity; drinks well when young but with long cellaring potential. Deep red crimson with purple tints. On the nose, spicy blackcurrant and cherry fruit with fine, dusty French oak. Rich cassis, mulberry and blackberry fruit flavours, firm and generous tannins, velvety mouth-feel and a long smooth finish.

2008 SHIRAZ/VIOGNIER

Deep red with ruby highlights at the rim. Attractive aromas of spice with white pepper and anise mingle with sweet redcurrant fruit notes all complemented by biscuity French oak. Ripe and chocolaty flavoured fruit with dense satiny tannins evolve through the palate to a lingering finish of sweet red fruits. Although released to drink now this wine has the potential to cellar until 2015.

2003 “JARRAH” SHIRAZ

The addition of a small amount of Viognier to this wine, as is often the practice with Shiraz in the northern Rhône, has added a touch of elegance, delicate fruit sweetness and a floral lift. Matured for 18 months in French oak, the palate is elegant and finely structured, with ripe blackberry plum and cherry fruit flavours perfectly integrated with subtle French oak showing great length of finish.

This premium red wine is made by blending small quantities of the very best Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot produced in each vintage; excellent cellaring potential. Deep vibrant black red with lovely aromas of red berries, plum and spicy oak. Deep, dark and highly structured with a very long finish of redcurrant, dark berries, cedar and spice. Delicious to drink young or cellared for up to ten years.

The 2008 Semillon (67%) – Sauvignon Blanc (33%) White Label is pale straw-colored with an enticing bouquet of spice, lemon-lime, citrus, and gooseberry. On the palate it is light to medium-bodied with slightly herbal, crisp, tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, excellent balance, and a dry, fruit-filled close. It is a great match for raw bar. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.
