- QUINTA DE VENTOZELO VINZELO DOURO TINTO, PORTUGAL, 2005, $17. A great buy from a winery producing Douro and port wines. Chosen 2005 Winery of the Year by Wine and Spirits magazine. Its stunningly beautiful vineyards overlook the Douro valley. It’s a stainless-steel fermented wine, a blend of four grapes. Raspberry, plums and exotic spice on the nose. Jammy red fruit and cassis on the full palate, with firm tannins.

- PENINSULA RIDGE INOX CHARDONNAY, BEAMSVILLE BENCH, NIAGARA, ONTARIO, 2006, $19. A mid-weight, unoaked Chardonnay (Inox is a French term for stainless steel tanks) with an aroma of citrus, pear, peach, green apple and some light grapefruit. The palate is dry, soft, rich and buttery-creamy with a good fruit-acid balance. Will gain complexity by cellaring up to five years. Pair with fish, seafood, unadorned poultry and other lighter fare.

- SILVER PINOT NOIR, LAKE MARIE VINEYARD, SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA, 2001, $62. Benjamin Silver works from a spare room in his house and is a producer, not a grower. He buys from six top vineyards to make 1,000 excellent cases of wine annually. This earthy, Burgundian-style Pinot is one of California’s best. Loads of vibrant red and black fruits, with some nice spice and an elegant palate. Pair with everything from potato chips to lobster and steak.
