Armed with twenty years of experience in both the Canadian and Australian wine industries, the Martins fulfilled their lifelong dream of producing world-class wine in their own winery. Jeff Martin now dedicates his experience to producing some totally unique wine styles at La Frenz. His talent is widely recognized and he still regularly judges at international wine shows in the U.S.

Jeff is very much a “hands on” winemaker, from bud burst in the vineyard to final blending and bottling. During the 2006 crush, Jeff celebrated a milestone in his life. Turning fifty, he realized that he was completing his 36th vintage, having made wine in both hemispheres.

2008 RESERVE CHARDONNAY

Grapes are from the Sonoran Vineyard. Concentrated and powerful yet with elegance and finesse, this wine would comfortably stand alongside all comers. The wine is barrel fermented exclusively in new, tight grained French oak and sur lie barrel aged for up to 14 months. The result is endless richness and complexity, essential to reserve quality chardonnay. Intriguing characters of roasted cashews, toast, oatmeal, and melon fruit are intertwined around a rich cream layered palate structure: superb!

2011 SEMILLON

The grapes from this vineyard are some of the oldest, if not the oldest, plantings of the variety in Canada which accounts for its year to year consistency. While young, the wine displays delicious citrus grapefruit, honeysuckle, and lemonade with a hint of lemon zest. As is typical of this variety, more golden color, intriguing toasty, straw, and dried fig characters will begin to develop with extended time in bottle for up to 5–7 yrs. Blended with 10% barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc for added body and lifted aromatics.

2011 VIOGNIER

Grapes are from the Probyn-Eastman Vineyard. This grape has fast become very popular in North America. It is an intriguing variety that is reluctant to show its best unless fully ripened. For this reason, good Viognier shows the richness and warmth of higher ripeness and resulting alcohol. Our wine shows the full medley of intriguing tropical fruits overlaid with hints of orange blossom. The palate is rich, ripe, and lingering with just a touch of sweetness.

2011 ALEXANDRIA

This wine has so much fruit and concentration that it is just an explosion of flavor, akin to eating freshly picked Muscat grapes (only better). It is any winemaker’s goal to capture and retain as much fruit flavors of the grape variety as possible. This wine is a kaleidoscope of tropical fruits, lychee, and musk. The fermentation was stopped to retain natural sweetness making it the perfect pairing with spicy foods or simply chilled for that special moment—you deserve it!

2011 CHARDONNAY

Grapes are from the Sonoran Vineyard. Our “peaches and cream” style Chardonnay has become synonymous with LAFRENZ and has developed a huge following of converts. We barrel ferment 50% of the blend components to capture the great complexity and body that high quality French oak can provide. The balance is slowly fermented in stainless steel to retain the lovely melon, peach, and nectarine fruit flavors that only the Okanagan can produce on stellar sites. The result is a complex wine with great finesse.

2009 MONTAGE

A blend of Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon in a serious but immediately drinkable style. This wine shows the full spectrum of dark cherry, blueberry, plum fruit characters together with rich earthy characters. Matured in French and American oak, the finish displays dark chocolate, vanilla, and fine grained tannins

2009 MERLOT

Grapes are from the Rattlesnake Vineyard. This is a great example of what a stand-alone merlot has to offer. It has great concentration from the vineyard, showing complex spices, plum, and raspberry fruits with a hint of fresh mint. The palate is like a comfy leather sofa, deeply lush, soft and round in structure yet jam packed with dark fruits, caramel, and chocolate. This is a very complete merlot from a great vintage.

2010 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Grapes are from the Sonoran Vineyard. Dark fruits predominate while menthol, coffee, toast, and dark chocolate are infused on the aroma. The palate is round yet structured with fine grained tannins showing the perfect acid balance to age gracefully for up to 10 years. This is a beautifully complete, elegant example of the variety.

2009 RESERVE PINOT NOIR

The dark color and concentration of this wine is a direct measure of the meticulous work that is needed in the vineyard with this variety. This wine shows depth and layering to deserve the designation of reserve quality Pinot Noir. A rich, structured palate is layer upon layer of red to dark fruits, sweet subtle oak vanillins all interwoven around its silky, fine grained tannin core. This wine exemplifies the saying “a clenched fist in a silk glove”.

2008 SHIRAZ

Grapes are from the Rockyfeller Vineyard. This shiraz is very reminiscent of a northern Rhone style. The aroma shows beautiful ripe red and dark fruits with floral and violet notes showing through. This shiraz is more about elegance and layering than sheer power, showing sweet fruits, superb French oak, ripe tannins, and a wonderful length to the palate. A great example of cool climate shiraz or syrah depending on where you are from in the world.

2008 RESERVE

This wine is a blend representing the very best assemblage of our Bordeaux varietals, the pinnacle of our “big red” program. This is the first release showing the influence of the excellent Rockyfeller vineyard. We were able to form a seamless blend utilising the very best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot has to offer. While the style has perennially always been rich, dark, powerful and endless, the use of 5 varietals has enabled extra elegance and layering that only multivarietal blending can achieve. Cellar carefully for up to 10yrs.
