MARGAUX · LEFT BANK
If Pauillac can be seen as the bastion of "traditional" Red Bordeaux, then Margaux represents its other facet in producing wines that are among the most sensual and alluring of Bordeaux. It is the biggest commune in the Médoc encompassing the communes of Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac andLabaude in addition to Margaux itself It is located in the centre of the Haut-Médoc, and is the closest of the important communes to the city of Bordeaux.
The soils in Margaux are the lightest and most gravelly of the Médoc with some of the soils also containing a high percentage of sand. Vineyards located in Cantenac and Margaux make up the core of the appelation with the best vineyard sites being located on well-drained slopes. It is these lighter, well-drained soils which give Margaux its deft touch and silky perfumes. Further from the water there is a greater clay content and the wines are less dramatically perfumed.
Margaux is the most diffuse of all the Médoc appelations with a reputation for scaling the heights with irreproachable wines such as Ch. Margaux and Ch. Palmer, but also plumbing the depths, with too many other Château not fulfilling their potential. There has been an upward shift in recent years, but the appellation cannot yet boast the reliability of St Julien. However the finest Margaux are exquisitely perfumed and and are models of refinement and subtlety which have few parallels in Bordeaux.

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenère. The toasty aromas of Brane-Cantenac are more pronounced this year. But on the palate, it still delivers a
matured and sophisticated expression as usual, without any trace of the 2021's character. I really like the
texture of the tannins, possesive yet ingenious, combined with a mellow density on the taste buds. This is
not only a credit to R'pulse maceration, but also to the winery's near-frenzied selection of the press wine.
Christophe, the technical director, told me that they have blended the best 12.7% from more than 100
samples into the Grand Vin, and eventually resulted in this surprising Brane-Cantenac 2021.

It is beautifully balanced. The grainy, silky, and coated tannins give the wine a great elegance. Undoubtedly a Brane of long aging.

73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot. The first vats are very aromatic with notable hints of raspberry. The Merlots are softer than usual and the Cabernets more concentrated. The blend of the two varietals should give a round and full-bodied wine,
with fine and elegant tannins. Typically, Bordeaux. The blend confirms our choice. Very good conditions also came
together for the harvest of the whites. The balance is excellent between acidity and roundness.

The color is very deep, almost black, sign of a great substance and a beautiful ripeness. The nose is a blend
between red and black fruits, such as blackcurrants or blackberries, cherry or redcurrant. The roasted notes

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot. Ch. d'Issan has increasingly impressed us over recent years. There is a wonderful explosion of fruit on the nose, with strong, black fruit and soft, creamy notes.
The combination of weight and polish is particularly pleasing. There is some grip, crunchy tannins, and a feeling of composure on the palate. The nose has excellent intensity. The palate has a real density of fruit and impressive length. The typical cooling freshness of this vintage is apparent on the finish, and the fruit is wonderfully pure, juicy, and ripe. This is one of the best wines from the Margaux appellation this year.

97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot. Dominated by the Cabernets this year (the blend is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot), this is a lovely fleshy
attractive wine with classic aromas of blackcurrant, wildflowers, and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, the
wine is round and smooth with good blackcurrant sweetness; some spice and lively, prickly tannins which are
structured but well integrated. This year’s Durfort is a lovely, happy wine, very much at ease with itself and
showing no trauma in spite of the difficult climate. It is elegantly balanced with an appetizing finish which
brings the wine’s different characteristics together.

The finish is very long, fresh, and lively, a little bit firm but already packed with flavor. Such balance is a brilliant expression of Chateau Margaux's noble terroir.
2006 is a great Château Margaux vintage. Of course, it is not 2005, or 2000; those vintages are exceptional. But it does have both the grace and the purity of the 1996, the so classic freshness of the 2004 and the heady power of the 1986 or the 1995. Such balance is a brilliant expression of Château Margaux’s noble terroir but demands a little patience. We recommend waiting for several more years.
