CÔTES DE BORDEAUX · RIGHT BANK

This hilly area, located on the Right Bank, was first formed in 2009 with the union of four regions: Côtes de Blaye, Côtes de Castillon, Côtes de Francs and Côtes de Cadillac. In 2016, Sainte-Foy Bordeaux joined the group. Together, they cover nearly 30,000 acres of vines, and represent 10 percent of total production of Bordeaux.
What’s wonderful about these regions is that each has a distinct terroir. They produce vastly different styles of wines, so there’s something for everyone. To help wine drinkers identify style, the labels contain both the broader appellation—Côtes de Bordeaux—as well as the specific region.
“It’s like a family,” says Aurélie Lascourrèges, a spokesperson for Union des Côtes de Bordeaux. “Every one is different, but they do have points in common, particularly their long history, their hilly landscape and their closeness to the rivers [the Gironde, the Garonne and the Dordogne], which affect their climates.”
The Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is young, so there are new winemakers and bottles to be are discovered all the time. And the best part? These wines currently represent some of the best values in Bordeaux, and with three great vintages on the market (2014, 2015, and 2016), there’s a lot to choose from.

100% Sauvignon Blanc.
Expressive, herbal and grass notes on the nose, quite aromatic and inviting, a creamy lemon curd, green apple, and pear aroma. Smooth and well balanced, nice and round, a thrilling amount of acidity accents the fat. I like the sharp citrus element, a really tangy lemon and lime, grapefruit pith with some weight and texture that’s like tannins giving some energy, focus and density. Thrilling and round, supple and juicy. Tangy, focussed, nicely defined and easy to drink. Well balanced and enjoyable.
Chateau d'Aiguilhe is also good when matched with Asian dishes, rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta.

· ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY VITICULTURE

Website

95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc.
Merlot dominates this blend-as befits the appellation- and gives the wine its charming roundness and suppleness, as well as the typical ripe, fleshy black fruit aromas. A year of ageing in oak barrels gives great complexity. Its flavourful, fruit profile makes it accessible now and over the next ten years.
Best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted braised and grilled dishes.

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.
Rich and intense nose, concentrated with dark bramble fruits. A shot of sharp intense strawberry and raspberry fruit hits the palate, super succulent and instantly mouthwatering, quite lean and linear though there is a nice expansion of fruit flavours while the tannins stay quite firm and straight. Touching on austere and severe but the softly plump juiciness keeps this enjoyable and there is layering of elements. Acidity is on the prominent side but this is quite captivating with crunchy, bright, just-ripe red fruits and chalky texture on the finish.

Stephan von Neipperg of Canon-La-Gaffeliere, Clos l'Oratoire and La Mondotte also owns Chateau d'Aiguilhe in the Castillon appellation. Violet reflections, great clarity of colour and immediate whoosh of salinity through the redcurrant fruits. Powerful and focused with bright berry flavours, it practically defines the term crunchy fruit, then softens to show creamier black cherry purée as it relaxes in the glass. Really a very tasty d'Aiguilhe from Vignobles Comtes von Neipperg. Extremely moreish.

This is the tenth vintage of the white wine from Puygueraud, where their cool soils worked wonders in this warmer vintage, keeping a tension and freshness to the wine. They use clones from the Loire, and this vintage there's a sunny, peachy feel to the fruit, with intense mineral notes.
